Jesus had His disciples get a donkey for Him that no one had ever ridden on. He came into town riding on a donkey which had that new donkey smell.  He was fulfilling a prophecy found in Zechariah 9.  Then people got really excited because they believed Jesus was going to deliver them from the power of Rome.  They were looking for a political leader when in reality, God sent them a spiritual leader.  Have you ever gotten your wires crossed with God.  I know I have.
